State patrol gives Nebraska drivers tips for travel during winter storm

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With winter weather on the way, law enforcement and the City of Lincoln are preparing for their role.

“As we go into a snow event, my job transitions into going down the highways and less-traveled roads and seeing for people who might be stuck or stranded or who have slid off and just need assistance,” Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Chase Landry said. “The state patrol is here to make sure those motorists can get home safely.”

Crews with the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department have already been treating bridges, intersections and some main roads with anti-icing brine.

Snowplow teams are on standby through Wednesday night.

Landry said when storms hit during overnight hours, it presents another set of troubles.

“That’ll effect both the evening commutes coming home from work and people going to work tomorrow,” he said. “If you can work remotely, I would suggest it, just so you don’t have to be on the road.”

LTU is asking some Lincolnites to help them out.

It is urging residents who live on bus routes to clear the sidewalks in a timely manner for easy access.

Landry said when snow hits and visibility is difficult, more drivers slide off of the road.

For those who need to travel on highways or interstates, Landry said it’s smart to have a blanket, handwarmers, food and water in case you get stranded.

There are resources should you need help.

Call *55 or 800-525-5555 for assistance from the NSP Highway Helpline.

“If you don’t need to be on the roads, don’t be on the roads,” Landry said. “But if you absolutely have to travel, at least know your routes. If you’re worried about potential snow and the driving conditions, let somebody know what your route is going to be just in case you get stranded or something so somebody at least knows where you’re at.”
