Car show for a cause; Lincoln Hy-vee raises money for veterans
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Hy-Vee on 27th and Superior Streets held its third annual Marlin Callaway Memorial Car Show on Saturday.
Though the weather gave the organizers a later start than they were hoping for, they still managed to get out and enjoy the day.
“We were a little worried this afternoon, but it came through, it cleared up, and it’s nice and cool out here,” said Shawn Bruzek with Hy-Vee. “It’s been going really well. We’re super excited.”
The goal of the car show is to bring people of the community together and have a good time looking at cool cars.
But there’s a bigger story behind the proceeds.
“The Hy-Vee Homefront benefits veterans and veteran’s families and it partners with our company across our eight-state region to help veterans in need,” Bruzek said.
Fifty percent of the money raised at the car show goes to the Homefront.
It’s meant to increase awareness for important veteran and active-duty military support efforts.
Bruzek said they usually see quite a few veterans come to the car show to support the idea.
The other 50% of the money is used to fund the car show.
“A big reason I like to do car shows is most of them go to charity and so if this goes to charity, I’m in,” said John Sanders, who brought his vintage Volkswagen to the show.
This year, Hy-Vee brought in a DJ and food trucks from Amigos and 402 Creamery.
The event was free for the public.
And right next door, Wall to Wall Wine & Spirits hosted a beer garden for those 21 and older.
Many people from the community got involved by bringing in their own cars to show off.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue even brought a truck to let kids take a look inside.
“It’s a good community, they’re all good people,” Sanders said. “It’s nice to talk to them and hear their stories about how they got their vehicles.”
Bruzek said this is a great opportunity for people to enjoy the weekend before the 4th of July and make connections with people around the city.
The 27th and Superior Streets Hy-Vee is employee-owned, so Bruzek said they like to stay involved with the people of Lincoln
“What we’re doing is just everything we can for the community,” he said. “And Lincoln is such a great place to do that.”
