New Changes to Nebraska Driver’s Licenses

Some big changes are coming when it comes to your driver's license. Starting July 20th, the DMV is launching a number of new driver licensing rules.
It's all an effort to stop fraud. One of those changes includes getting your picture taken first and then filling out the paper work.
After July 20th, if you're getting a new driver license or renewing one, you'll have to bring two documents as proof of your Nebraska residence. Those documents could be a utility bill or a bank statement.
Nebraska resident Brandi Sesteka says, “Its one more step in a process that I don't enjoy very much. But, in the end, if it protects us a little better, than its worth it.”
One of the biggest changes will be that you won't get your license at the DMV. Instead, they will mail it to you after you leave. The DMV will give you a temporary document that looks similar to a license. It has a photo and demographic information but is only vaild for 30 days.
DMV Director Beverly Neth says, “We have been working very closely with law enforcement, retailers, bars, groceries, banking industries, and just the other day we met with the Transportation Security Administration who assured us they will accept that document to board an airplane.”
It will normally take five to seven business days to receive your new driver's license because the DMV is going to a centralized system where the cards will be printed in only one place.
Your card will also look different. They're lighter weight and tamper resistant. Neth says, “It's actually more durable than the existing driver's licenses. And it also has a lot of security features that will really present a challenge to anyone who wants to counterfeit the cards.”
If you're under 18 and don't have proof of a residence, a parent or guardian can bring in proof of their residence. Those who aren't up for renewal don't need to go and get the new card, they can wait until there license is up.
