‘We see accidents all the time’: Residents react to LPD’s O Street enforcement project

O Street

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – For years, O Street has remained a busy and high-traffic area.

It’s also a relatively dangerous area, where numerous crashes occur every year and residents report excessive speeding and noise.

The Lincoln Police Department just conducted a four-month enforcement project, using extra funding from the state to pay police officers overtime to patrol between 17th and 98th streets.

The detail focused on nights and weekends.

“When we’re looking at places to enforce traffic, not only are we looking at where citizens complain that there’s speeding, but we also look at where accidents are happening and, more significantly, where people are getting hurt when just driving in their motor vehicles” said Sgt. Sara Genoways, who works in LPD’s traffic unit.

Residents near O Street are no strangers to the noise and speeding on this busy road, and one neighbor feels that the investment in this project was worth it.

“I know how serious it is down there; we see accidents all the time,” said Christopher Traynor, who lives near a busy O Street intersection, ” I know there’s memorials out there for people that have died over the years in that intersection, so I think that the intersection is definitely worth patrolling.”

Others feel that O Street will always face speeding and noise and that the money could’ve been more beneficial elsewhere.

“I don’t really think there’s much that can be done; it’s a busy street,” Kayli Hamburger said. “I think there’s other things that can be done, or that money could be spent in other places, than patrolling O Street.”

LPD plans on conducting these projects of extra enforcement in busy areas periodically.
