Several rounds of storms across Nebraska into the weekend, some to be severe
Thursday kicks off a very active period for Nebraska, with storms possible each day heading into this weekend. Some of these storms could be severe, with a risk for severe weather across our state each day.
For Lincoln and eastern Nebraska, a small chance to see scattered storms late Thursday, with storms possible by Friday morning and better chances Friday evening into Saturday and Saturday afternoon.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST
The latest update from the Storm Prediction Center has a Level 2 Slight risk across west-central Nebraska. Storms across southwest Nebraska that form could grow stronger with the threat of a couple tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind all possible.
Storms progress east slowly Thursday night and into Friday, with the severe threat dropping off overnight.
Scattered storms in southeast Nebraska will be possible early Friday, but they will likely be non-severe if we see them.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND
Storms that develop again late Friday afternoon through early Saturday could be strong, too. A Slight risk for these storms shifts a bit eastward for Friday, including the Tri-Cities, Columbus, North Platte and most of central Nebraska.
With these storms – isolated tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail – all modes of severe weather are possible, again. Storms will spark in central Nebraska and race eastward overnight, carrying over into Saturday.
Storms will spark in central Nebraska and race eastward overnight, carrying over into Saturday. Both Friday and Saturday will be days to watch for eastern Nebraskans, as storm chances increase later in the week.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD
And again, an eastern shift in the severe weather potential for Saturday. Another Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for eastern Nebraska now includes Lincoln, Omaha and most of eastern Nebraska. All severe weather hazards are possible for Saturday.
This time, a cold front at the surface will be moving through. Depending on the timing of this front, storms could fire near Columbus/Lincoln/Beatrice and are expected to quickly move east.
That being said, storms will be possible through the early afternoon Saturday and into the evening. If you’re headed to the Husker game, rain gear should come with you.
