Nebraska first lady Suzanne Pillen reads farming book to Prescott Elementary students

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – First lady Suzanne Pillen came to Prescott Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon to read to kids in an after-school program.

Gov. Jim Pillen proclaimed this week as Agriculture Literacy Week, and the first lady has been touring Nebraska schools.

At Prescott, she read a book called “Right this Very Minute: A Table to Farm Book About Food and Farming.”

During the reading, she asked kids questions about agriculture and what’s grown and raised in Nebraska.

The goal is to get kids interested about farming, and for fifth grader Aaliyah Smith. it may have worked.

“I want to be a teacher, but I’m starting to think of being a farmer because I really like to like watch plants grow,” she said.

Aaliyah said she recently took note of the seeds in an apple and thought, “Maybe I could plant this in my backyard to see if it would grow.”

The Community Learning Center at Prescott invited Pillen because she has firsthand experience living on a farm.

CLC Director Nola Derby-Bennett said the program is always looking for guests to host activities like this to engage and educate the youth.
