Norris Middle School student using artwork to help spread kindness

Norris schools are kicking off a new anti-bullying campaign called ‘Be Kind.’
The walls of Norris Middle School are littered with posters bearing that motto – and there are several of those that stand out.
Those posters are drawn by Makinley Hecht, who has autism, and is an 8th grader at Norris Middle School.
“This is a picture of an old car being bullied by some newer cars and this bullying needs to stop because you know how people don’t like it,” Makinley said, while holding up one of his posters. “We should treat other the way you want to be treated.”
Makinley’s artwork is displayed for all of his friends to see, which is his way of spreading the ‘Be Kind’ message.
“It’s good to meet new people,” he said. “Because they can become your friend, your pal, your partner or a bro!”
Makinley’s principal asked him to do the drawings at the beginning of the school year — and they’ve become a big hit.
His peers and teachers talk about how Makinley’s posters are a great, helpful reminder of the need to be kind to others.
Makinley says what makes him the happiest is that his passion for drawing can help out those around him.
