Two off-duty LPD officers injured in crash southeast of Lincoln are back home

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two off-duty officers who were injured in a crash southeast of Lincoln last week are out of the hospital.

Officers Kate Schwenke and Brent Lovett were helping a driver who struck a pickup truck near 158th Street and Saltillo Road on Oct. 18.

All three were near the vehicle when a Chevy Bolt struck it head-on, injuring the off-duty officers and the driver.

Lovett and Schwenke were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.  Schwenke was released shortly after.

In an update Wednesday, the Lincoln Police Department said Lovett was released this week after a stay in the intensive care unit.

A day before the crash, Schwenke shot 27-year-old Simon Kafka after police said he stabbed another officer in the neck.

Kafka has since been released from the hospital and charged with attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault on an officer and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
