16-year-old accused of killing newborn child in northwest Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A 16-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of her newborn child in Gordon.

On Nov. 6, the Gordon Police Department responded to a home on a report of a baby not breathing after a teen gave birth, according to an arrest affidavit filed last week.

When an officer arrived, he spoke with the teen’s father, who said the baby was stillborn.

But the officer found that the infant’s throat was cut. There were also multiple stab wounds in the baby’s chest.

The officer tried to save the newborn’s life.

During the investigation, officers learned that the teen’s father found the baby in an empty dog food bag in a closet, the affidavit says.

Investigators searched the teen’s bedroom and found several blood-soaked clothes and towels.

Later on, they found a bloody knife hidden in a coat in the closet, according to the affidavit.

The teen was arrested and charged Thursday with first-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
