Johanns Asks For Drought Assistance
Governor Mike Johanns is declaring parts of Nebraska's farm land a disaster area. Nebraska farmers have suffered heavy drought conditions for two years in a row. Now the Governor is making a plea to Congress for Federal funding. Fewer crops equals a smaller paycheck. But if Governor Johanns can convince Congress that 28 additional counties-from Clay to Cass -need assistance, low-interest loans will be offered to area farmers. Some places are seeing 30 to 40 percent below average crop yields. Earlier this year 53 counties qualified as disaster areas from the drought.
