Lincoln man wrote two bad checks to buy kangaroos, alpaca and donkey, court docs say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Last fall, a Lincoln man was the highest bidder on two kangaroos, an alpaca and a donkey.

But court documents say he wrote bad checks to get them.

Matthew White, 38, was arrested on Friday, according to Madison County Jail records.

On Nov. 11, he bought four animals from Nelson Livestock Auction in Norfolk for $6,250.

When the auction company tried to deposit the check, it was returned because White’s account was closed, an arrest affidavit says.

The company told him what happened, and White wrote another $6,250 check from a different bank account.

But that check was also returned, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, because the account was frozen.

Law enforcement began an investigation and tried to arrange a payment, court documents say.

Authorities said White tried to pay with a credit card in January, but it was declined.

White then failed to show up to two meetings where he was supposed to pay in cash, according to the affidavit.

A warrant for his arrest was issued on Jan. 24.

He is charged with issuing a bad check of $5,000 or more, which is a felony.

White is being held in jail on a $50,000 bond. He must pay $5,000 to be released.

His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday in Madison County Court.
