Man dies after being hit by semi on I-80 west of Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man who was hit by a semitrailer Saturday on Interstate 80 west of Lincoln has died.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said Wednesday that 25-year-old Bryan Martinez of Lincoln died Monday night.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the crash on I-80 near Emerald.

Martinez had run out of gas about a mile east and was walking in the middle of the interstate, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators think Martinez was under the influence of alcohol.

“There’s reasons why we don’t let pedestrians up on the interstate,” Houchin said. “Been up there working a lot in the past through my career, and vehicles go by you pretty quick.”

The crash shut down a part of westbound I-80 for several hours.

An investigation is ongoing.  The semi driver has not been cited in the crash.
