Pillen proclaims Victory in Europe Day in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – In honor of the 79th anniversary of a key date in World War II, the governor declared Wednesday to be Victory in Europe Day in Nebraska.

Along with the proclamation, Gov. Jim Pillen also unveiled a medal for Nebraskans who served in the war.

The qualifications to receive the medal are listed below:

  • Served in the military between Dec. 1, 1941, and Dec. 31, 1946
  • Be a legal resident of Nebraska, or be able to prove Nebraska residency at enlistment
  • Was not dishonorably discharged

Almost 140,000 Nebraskans served in World War II, and it’s estimated that there are still around 800 alive.
