Man used stolen identity to buy vehicle from Lincoln auto shop, affidavit says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was arrested Wednesday after using a stolen identity to buy a vehicle in Lincoln last month, court documents say.
The investigation started on May 8 when a man reported to police that someone used his identity to buy a car from Los Amigos Auto Sales.
The victim — who had lost his ID — never applied for the loan to purchase the vehicle, a Jaguar XE valued at $14,900, an arrest affidavit says.
During an investigation, officers learned that 26-year-old Dekarlos Haynes bought the vehicle using the victim’s identity.
The auto shop’s owner told police that the loan was not finalized due to Haynes lacking proof of residence, according to the affidavit.
On May 19, an officer tried pulling over the vehicle, but Haynes sped off and drove over a median, the affidavit alleges.
The vehicle became disabled, and Haynes ran away, evading arrest. Officers took the passenger into custody and identified Haynes as the driver.
Investigators later searched the vehicle and found documents with Haynes’ name on them.
Haynes was taken into custody Wednesday and lodged on suspicion of felony identity theft.
A Lancaster County judge set Haynes’ bond at $25,000, meaning he must pay $2,500 to be released from jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 11.
