Lincoln woman scammed out of nearly $2,000 in Apple Pay, Bitcoin scheme
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln woman was scammed out of nearly $2,000 on Saturday by sending money through Apple Pay and a Bitcoin service.
The Lincoln Police Department received a call just before 2:30 p.m. from a 75-year-old woman saying she was scammed.
The victim said a person claiming to be Sgt. Randy Clark with LPD called her and said there was a warrant out for her arrest.
According to police, the scammer told her to pay $2,400 to avoid going to jail.
Police said the scammer requested the money be sent through Apple Pay and Bitcoin.
The victim sent $1,500 through Apple Pay and an additional $480 through a Coin Start machine, according to officials.
Once the victim realized it was a scam, she removed her debit card from Apple Pay and called the police.
LPD said the agency will never call about any sort of payment over the phone through apps or Bitcoin.
