Lincoln man convicted of trying to buy kangaroos and alpaca with bad checks

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man who bought exotic animals with money he didn’t have took a plea deal Monday.

Matthew White, 39, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted issuing of a bad check, a felony.

The case began in November, when White attended a livestock auction in Norfolk. Court documents say he sells animals for a living.

White wrote a $6,250 check at the auction, becoming the new owner of two kangaroos, an alpaca and a donkey.

But the check was returned because his bank account was closed, authorities said.

The auction operator told him about it, and White wrote another check from a different account.

That check also bounced because that account was frozen.

The auction company gave White several more opportunities to pay for the animals, but it never got its money.

A judge issued a warrant for White’s arrest in January, and he was taken into custody in March.

White will be sentenced on Sept. 12 in Madison County District Court.

Under the plea agreement, he will pay $3,504 in restitution. Prosecutors will also recommend probation, according to court records.
