Omaha day care worker gets probation for leaving 1-year-old in hot van

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — An Omaha day care worker was sentenced Monday for the death of a 1-year-old girl in a hot van.
Ryan Williams, 62, will spend two years on probation for negligent child abuse resulting in death.

On Aug. 21, Williams transported about nine children to Kidz of the Future Childcare near 50th and Leavenworth streets.
He said he forgot to check the van after unloading because he got distracted by a boy who did not want to get out.

About five hours later, he went to start his afternoon route and found the girl unresponsive in the van.
She was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Court records say her body temperature was 109 degrees. The heat index in Omaha was 114 that day.
