High school football preview: Waverly looking to burst through the semifinals

WAVERLY, Neb. (KLKN) – Waverly finished the 2023 season 10-1.

The Vikings’ only loss was the last game of the season with a trip to Memorial Stadium on the line.

Waverly has played in four of the last six Class B semifinal games.

“Just trying to get over that hump,” said sixth-year head coach Reed Manstedt.

This year, the team will be without All-State quarterback Nolan Maahs.

But stepping in is senior QB Carter McMillan, who is ready for the moment.

“Finally being able to play Friday night in front of the crowd and just playing with the team you’ve been playing with since you’re a young kid, I feel like that’s what I am most excited for,” said McMillan.

Waverly will kick off its season on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. against Bennington.
