‘When has this money never been accepted?’: Husker fan upset as stadium goes cashless
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – From now on, if you want to buy a pop in the stands or head to concessions at Memorial Stadium, you’ll need to bring your card.
Memorial Stadium is going cashless.
Husker Athletics says on its website the improved Wi-Fi at the stadium will make cashless concessions the most efficient option for fans.
But one Husker fan feels differently.
“When has this money never been accepted?” Linda Mueller asked.
Mueller has been a season ticketholder for more than 32 years.
She said her husband and son went to a scrimmage two weeks ago and were shocked to hear the stadium wouldn’t accept their $20 bill.
“I just can’t believe we’re going to this extent in America,” Mueller said.
She said her family wasn’t notified of the cashless concessions beforehand.
“I’m worried about the people who aren’t going to know this coming into the stadium,” Mueller said.
She said she can’t imagine going to a game with just her card.
“I don’t normally take my card, but I guess I’ll have to start if I want to go to the games,” she said.
She is worried the hawkers going up and down the stands won’t make as much money as they did while using cash.
Mueller said if everyone is using a card, “it’s going to slow down the process.”
One Memorial Stadium hawker said the card readers they use are not the most reliable. He said his failed a few times during the Spring game.
A student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said he’s always used cash at games.
“It would definitely blow to have to take a card and all that stuff,” he said.
Channel 8 reached out to the university, but it referred back to a previous press release.
Husker Athletics said all venues will move to cashless concessions, merchandise and ticket sales starting this fall.
