Waverly squeaks by Norris in Class B heavyweight matchup

FIRTH, Neb. (KLKN) – The Waverly football team kept its winning streak alive Friday night, taking down Norris 28-21 on the road.
The Vikings started the game off with a bang, getting a stop on defense and taking the ball deep into the red zone.
Junior running back Nathan Axmann finished the drive off with a 12-yard touchdown run, giving the Vikings a 7-0 lead.
On the very next drive, Norris fumbled the snap and set up another scoring opportunity for Waverly.
Quarterback Carter McMillan found tight end Harrison Smith for a 2-yard touchdown, making the score 14-0 in the first quarter.
The Titans finally woke up in the second quarter. Senior running back Crew Moeller got a pitch from Jarrett Behrends and took it 15 yards for a touchdown, cutting Waverly’s lead to 14-7 at the break.
Norris came out with some fire in the third quarter. On the opening drive, Moeller got another pitch and took it 25 yards untouched to the end zone to tie the game.
But Waverly’s run game was too much to handle. Axmann added a 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Waverly extends its win streak to six games, making its record 6-2 on the season. The Vikings will take on Lincoln Pius X next Friday.
Norris falls to 5-3 and will look to bounce back against Elkhorn next Friday.
