Nebraska state trooper urges drivers to stay safe during busy holiday travel

LINCOLN, Neb., (KLKN) – As the holiday season arrives, many Nebraskans will drive to see friends and family.

The Nebraska State Patrol said the holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for travel, and they’re working overtime to monitor the highways and keep drivers safe.

Sgt. Sean Velte said a lot of simple traffic stops around this time of year escalate into something more.

“During the holidays, we’ll try to cut down on impaired drivers because, during the holidays, people get together to celebrate,” Velte said. “But trying to keep impaired drivers off the roads is one of our main goals.”

Nebraska’s wide open highways could come with some challenges, especially with slick roads. The winter weather could make a smooth trip into a dangerous one.

Sgt. Velte said the forecast can change in the blink of an eye in Nebraska, so he advises to stay up to date on your local weather.

The Patrol said if you see another motorist driving dangerously, contact NSP by dialing *55.
