Lincoln non-profits spreading gratitude, feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and enjoying time with loved ones. Volunteers at the People’s City Mission on Thursday made sure nobody was left out on the holiday.
The event is part of an annual tradition to provide a Thanksgiving meal and gain a sense of community, so others don’t have to face the holiday alone.
Pastor Tom of the People’s City Mission said when people are homeless, it could feel like they’re on the outside looking in.
“So, when we’re able to celebrate this and people come and volunteer, they see that Lincoln cares, have a great Thanksgiving meal, and feel like they’re a part of everybody,” he said.
Volunteers came together to help prepare and serve the meals, from turkey and stuffing to pie and mashed potatoes.
But while the day focused on providing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, it was an opportunity for volunteers to give back to their community.
Many volunteers that served said they’re inspired by the simple joy of helping others, especially during the holiday season.
“The mission’s been doing this for 117 years,” said Pastor Tom. “It’s a chance to connect with people on a non-service base and be like family.”
The non-profit organization Matt Talbot also had a similar event, providing a little care to those who may not have anywhere else to turn.
They also served some hot meals and opened their doors to the people in Lincoln for the holiday.
But, whether it’s through a warm meal, a kind word, or simply offering someone a seat at the table, Pastor Tom says everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and compassion, no matter their circumstances.
