Man shot by Lincoln Police in 2023 found guilty of running over woman
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A man was found guilty Friday of running over a woman in north Lincoln during a confrontation with police in 2023.
Garrett Hanika, 36, was convicted of second-degree assault, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of methamphetamine.
Some of his charges were reduced under a plea deal, and four felony counts were dropped entirely.

On Nov. 21, 2023, police approached Hanika, who was in a Jeep at the Microtel near 27th Street and Cornhusker Highway.
He had a federal warrant for his arrest, according to the Lincoln Police Department.
Hanika put the Jeep in reverse and crashed into Officer Nicholas Vest’s cruiser, police said.

He also tried to run over Vest, who fired two shots, striking Hanika once in the head and once in a lower extremity.
A woman then got out of the Jeep, and LPD said Hanika ran her over. She suffered serious injuries.
Hanika’s sentencing is scheduled for March 20.
He faces anywhere from three to 120 years in prison.
