‘We’re super proud’: Husker senior Alexis Markowski taking on one last ride in the NCAA tournament

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A big moment for Husker fans as the Nebraska Women’s Basketball team was selected as the number ten seed in the 2025 March Madness tournament.

For the seniors on the team like Alexis Markowski, it’s not just about basketball, it’s about representing their hometown.

Born and raised in Lincoln, Markowski has had an amazing career so far. She played basketball at Lincoln Pius X before becoming a Husker.

Markowskis’ father, Andy Markowski, told Channel 8 he is so happy to be able to cheer his daughter on for one final ride with the Huskers.

“We’re super proud,” he said. “Alexis had a really good high school career, so going to college and competing in the Big Ten, which is one of the best conferences. And to get to the NCAA tournament where all of the best players and all of the best teams finish their season. It’s been super fun to watch and have a front row seat to it. I’m just excited to see her finish her career with hopefully one last March Madness run.”

Alexis Markowski has had a stunning career, with countless awards and honors throughout her four years at UNL.

In 2022, she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and just recently named to the First Team All Big-Ten honors for the 2024-2025 season.

Andy Markowski said having played for Nebraska basketball himself, it’s nice to see his daughter following in his footsteps.

“Basketball’s been a part of my life as a player, as a coach,” he said. “And now to have a child, Alexis, being able to participate in it and having made it two out of the previous three years. Senior year was really a goal of hers and a goal of our families to experience March Madness and have her be a part of it.”

Alexis leads the Nebraska women’s team in scoring and rebounding, ranking her among the top ten players in the Big Ten Conference in both categories.

Andy said the community of Lincoln has really helped push his daughter and this team to success.

“The Lincoln support, the Nebraska support, the attendance over the last season and over the last four years of Alexis’ career has been fantastic,” he said. “I know a lot of people will be tuning in tonight to see where they go and I would anticipate a few fans making the travel. Nebraska fans in general are just world-class.”
