Athlete of the Week: Elkhorn South’s EJ Brown

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – EJ Brown, a senior at Elkhorn South is reaching new heights in her track and field career.
Brown signed with Nebraska on Friday, officially committing to her hometown school.
Nebraska’s own is staying home.

“Nebraska really just hit home,” said Brown. “I just knew that program is going to take me the farthest.”
The two time high jump state champ is following in her family footsteps.
Her brother Elliot, just graduated at UNL where he spent five seasons with Nebraska football.
Her father, Lance brown, was also a Cornhusker on the football team becoming a member of the three time national championship teams.
But, EJ is excited to create her own path.
“Just carrying that legacy of the Brown name for the Huskers is really cool,” said Brown. “It definitely means a lot.”
The Nebraska native didn’t pick up track and field until she was around middle school.
In fact, she grew up playing softball. Entering into her 7th grade year, she says her dad forgot to sign her up.
So, she then had to decide between volleyball or track and field.
She discovered a new talent and passion in high jump.
“They threw me in a couple events and realized I had the natural ability and strength to do high jump,” said Brown.
EJ is the back-to-back state champion for high jump at Elkhorn south. and
Her senior season is just now getting underway and while she’s chasing the chance for a three peat, she really wants to accomplish a different goal.
“I feel like I’m striving to get the Class A state record of 5’11,” Brown said. “That would just be the cherry on top of everything.
