Trial date moved to 2026 for former Seward County deputy accused of manslaughter

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The trial date for a Seward County deputy accused of manslaughter has been pushed back to 2026.

On Tuesday, Lancaster County District Judge Susan Strong scheduled Anthony Gann’s trial to begin on Feb. 9, 2026.

The trail was originally scheduled for earlier this year before being moved to August.

Last week, Gann filed another motion to continue the trial to 2026, according to court documents.

In April 2024, a grand jury indicted Gann in the killing of 43-year-old Jorge Luis Santana-Ramirez.

The charge stems from a fatal shooting on Interstate 80 on Oct. 23, 2023.

Deputies tried pulling over Santana-Ramirez as he was going west on Interstate 80.

But the Seward County Sheriff’s Office said he didn’t stop, instead turning around and heading east in the westbound lanes.

Santana-Ramirez later crossed into the eastbound lanes and came to a stop 7 miles west of Lincoln, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office said he then refused to come out of the car.

Gann shot Santana-Ramirez, who deputies said had a weapon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
