Garage sales in and around Crete sizzling with deals despite heatwave

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) — Despite the triple digit temperatures, there was seemingly no impact to a string of city-wide garage sales in Crete.

“It’s very, very hot but you just have to be dealing with the day,” said shopper Yaneli Mendoza, who was rummaging through a garage sale amidst the heat on Friday.

“Everything is very expensive at this moment, so sometimes you have to look in different ways,” she said.

Homeowner Lois Godfrey has held garage sales for decades at her home in Blue River Lodge, a small community just outside of Crete.

“I’ve lived down here almost 37 years, and we use to have community garage sales, but this year we only have two” she said.

Godfrey’s neighbor Chris Neukirk shopped her sale, and when asked if she expected the high temps, she said “I knew, because we’re having our own sale, but I figured I could get out for a few sales before the heat gets too terrible.”

Neukirk said that the heat is felt most in the afternoon, and went on to say “but the heat didn’t stop me because you never know what you’re going to find.”
