High-traffic Lincoln bridge opens three weeks early

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department on Thursday announced the reopening of the First Street bridge three weeks early.

The bridge over Oak Creek had been under repairs since late April and was expected to be completed in early August.

“Completing this project three weeks early speaks to our dedication to offering great service to community members and businesses who adapt during construction,” said Liz Elliott, the department’s director. “We are proud to reopen the First Street bridge with improved safety and durability, restoring a key connection that will make summer travel and access to nearby facilities easier for everyone.”

The project included repairs to the bridge abutment, approach slabs, girders, guardrail and bridge deck surface treatments.
