Heat on full blast this week in Nebraska and toward end of July
A FLASH FLOOD WARNING is in effect until 3:15pm this afternoon for Gage and Jefferson counties. 2-3″ of rainfall has fallen this morning and an additional 1-2″ is expected with thunderstorms. Low lying areas, urban areas and places near creeks and rivers will flood. TURN AROUND AND DON’T DROWN if you see high water on the roadways.
A FLOOD WATCH is in effect until 10pm tonight for several counties including Hastings, Hebron and Beatrice. 1-3″ of rainfall will be possible within thunderstorms later this afternoon. Make sure to get to higher ground if you notice elevated water levels.
We are put on full blast for summer heat this week, starting Monday.
This first day of a longer heat wave, a Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Monday night for central and eastern Nebraska. The heat index this afternoon is expected to peak around 105-110°.
While this is typical summer heat for us, today is only the beginning of our longest heat wave of 2025 yet.
While we are not within an Extreme Heat Warning today, still be cautious. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion can still be possible with the high humidity and sweltering summer temperatures.
Highs will be in the low, middle and upper 90s across Nebraska on Monday.
We’ll start to feel the wrath of the heat and humidity even today, compared to this past weekend.
High humidity is expected with dew points reading middle 70s. Wouldn’t be surprised to hear of a few upper 70° dew point readings later as well.
In all, it’s going to be dangerously hot Monday. Then again Tuesday and Wednesday.
While confidence in any storms developing this afternoon is fairly low with a cap of warmer air aloft to overcome, there may be some more storms this evening and overnight especially for central and south-central Nebraska. Any stronger storms may bring some hail and gusty winds as a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk covers most of Nebraska again.
The low level jet at night would help any storms to persist into early Tuesday, with some cloud cover left over.
While we’re set to experience pretty typical summer heat these next three days, it’s going to be our longest heat wave of the summer so far (from now to the end of July).
The Heat Risk map does peak in the red category on Tuesday across eastern Nebraska.
Prolonged heat and humidity in this heat wave persists through Wednesday, then will come right back over the weekend.
We look hot and humid not only for a majority of this week, but for the end of July as well.
