$1.2 million upgrade in the works for baseball fields at Lincoln’s Jensen Park

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A public-private partnership is being formed to improve the baseball fields at Jensen Park.

“Every child deserves a quality place to play,” Councilman Tom Duden said Wednesday at the park near 84th Street and Yankee Hill Road.

New nonprofit Lincoln Youth Athletics is trying to raise $300,000 from private donations, with a $300,000 match from the city.

The partnership is also applying for a $600,000 grant from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

“These upgrades are just the beginning to a broader commitment to youth sports in our city,” Duden said.

The $1.2 million project would include regrading the infield to improve drainage and safety, improving the outfield turf and installing a full irrigation system.

New fencing, new dugouts, handicap-accessible walkways, bleachers, lighting, and an upgraded parking lot would all be included in the renovation as well.

“This work doesn’t just make the fields look better; it ensures more playable days, more inclusive access, and a better overall experience for every team that steps onto the diamond,” Parks and Recreation Director Maggie Stuckey-Ross said.

Duden said he hopes the city can improve soccer, softball, pickleball and other athletic fields in Lincoln in the future.
