Nebraska tight end Mac Markway suffers another season-ending knee injury

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule announced a major blow for the Huskers’ tight end room.

LSU transfer Mac Markway suffered a second season-ending knee injury in as many seasons, Rhule said in a press conference Thursday morning.

According to Rhule, Markway had some swelling in his knee after the first day of camp, and an MRI revealed his ACL repair last season “failed.”

“Heartbreaking news,” Rhule said. “He’s an unbelievable human, I feel terrible for him. I was really excited for what I knew he was about to do, but I know the human he is and I’m excited for what he does next.”

Markway received plenty of praise from the coaching staff throughout the spring and he was expected to make a run at the starting tight end position this fall.

“I wanted to coach him, he’s such a great kid and my heart goes out to him,” offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen said. “I got to know him as a human, but I’ve never coached him. His testing numbers from the summer were really good. I was really excited about coaching him because his numbers are what you look for in a tight end.”

Holgorsen went on to express his confidence in the tight end room as a whole.

“We have a good group of tight ends,” Holgorsen said. “It’s always about what’s next. We still have six other guys that have potential and will get better, they’ve gotten better everyday. We’re going to be OK at that position.”

A few notable tight ends that will look to fill that void is junior Luke Lindenmeyer, sophomore Carter Nelson and senior Heinrich Haarberg.
