9-year-old boys set vehicle ablaze in Kearney, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two 9-year-old boys are responsible for a vehicle fire and multiple thefts from vehicles in Kearney, police say.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, a vehicle caught fire near 36th Street and Avenue X in northeast Kearney.

Based on video surveillance and witness statements, police said two boys were running through the neighborhood entering unlocked vehicles and stealing things from them.

The Kearney Police Department said the same two boys intentionally set the vehicle on fire.

KPD said it contacted the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office about the youths.

They were then released to their parents.
