Lincoln Children’s Zoo welcomes birth of porcupine
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Children’s Zoo on Wednesday announced the birth of a porcupine.
It is the first prehensile-tailed porcupine ever born at the zoo.
The baby porcupine, called a porcupette, was born on Aug. 1.
It weighed 15 ounces and has since grown to 2 pounds, 6 ounces.
The zoo said it has sent in a quill for DNA testing to determine the porcupine’s sex.
Porcupines are born with short quills covered by reddish-orange hair, and they lose the hair as they grow.
The zoo said many of this porcupine’s quills are already visible, and it expects the rest of its hair to fall out within the next couple weeks.
