‘Our shopping floor is almost bare’: Lincoln nonprofit in need of donations

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A nonprofit is asking for the public’s help in restocking its shelves.

The Good Neighbor Community Center provides free resources, from diapers to language classes, for anyone in need.

But now with winter approaching, it is struggling to fill the ever-increasing need.

“Our shopping floor is almost bare,” said Zainab Al-Baaj, director of Middle East North Africa Hope at the center. “We need donations, we need people who have finished their garage sales this year, if they can send us their donation, we would love to accept that.”

The center is asking specifically for men’s, women’s and kids’ clothes, as well as household items.

It has been serving people in the capital city for decades.

Al-Baaj said more people than normal have been coming in.

“Some days we have 50 families who show up for shopping,” she said. “So imagine how much traffic we have coming here.”

The center caters to people from all backgrounds

“We don’t care who they are, where they come from, what they look like,” Al-Baaj said. “This is God’s center, and everybody is welcome here.”

And she said the center couldn’t serve all of those people without some extra help.

“Without the public, without our very nice and humble community, the donors, volunteers … we’re not going to be here,” she said.
