Waverly woman loses $4,000 after scammer claims her card was used to buy child porn

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Waverly woman was scammed out of $4,000 on Wednesday after she was told her credit card was used to buy child pornography.
According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the 75-year-old woman got a notification on her phone alerting her that her card was fraudulently used.
The woman was directed to pull money from her bank in Waverly and deposit the cash into a bitcoin ATM in Lincoln.
After the woman put $2,000 into the ATM, the sheriff’s office said she thought it was a scam, but the scammer convinced her otherwise.
The woman then put $2,000 more into the ATM.
The sheriff’s office said the woman also downloaded an app on her phone that allowed the scammer to take control of her device.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman deleted the app on her phone and put a watch on her bank account.
The scam is still under investigation.
