‘Traveling is expensive’: Husker fans watching the team’s first true road game from home
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Husker fans are often referred to as the best fans in the country due to their commitment to supporting the team.
But many are choosing to watch Nebraska’s first true road game from home.
“Traveling that far is expensive,” said UNL student and Husker fan, Ty Skalka.
Dozens of people around downtown Lincoln gave similar reasons for not going to the game, which is five days away.
According to Tripadvisor.com, it could cost between $185 to $260 for a one night stay at a hotel in the College Park, Maryland, where the game will be played.
A round-trip flight out of Omaha’s Eppley Airport would run you closer to $600.
Due to no direct flights out of Lincoln Airport, you would also have to add the costs of getting to Omaha as well.
For those with a little more time on their hands, driving is a possible option, but you would need to spend almost twenty hours on the road to get through the 1,300-mile distance between Nebraska and Maryland.
A tough deal for fans who are known to travel, Skalka said he needs more than one reason to travel that type of distance rather than solely supporting the team.
He previously traveled to the Huskers’ season opener in Kansas City, and said many different factors motivated him.
“It’s Kansas City, it’s close, it’s a late game to kick off the year, every Nebraskan fan was traveling,” said Skalka.
One Lincoln travel agency I spoke with told me briefly that at this point, they’ve been helping more fans book trips for the game against UCLA on Nov. 8.
One fan said California is a more typical vacation location for her family.
Many feel that attending this Saturday’s game is simply not worth it to them.
“They haven’t been to the college football playoffs or anything like that, and they’re not known to have a crazy game day environment or anything like that,” said Skalka.
One family who spoke with Channel 8 is going to be at the Nebraska-Maryland game on Oct. 11, but ironically, says the trip was meant to see the Chicago Bears vs. the Washington Commanders.
Due to the games being just 20 minutes away from each other, the family said they figured attending the Nebraska game is the least they could do to support their home team.
