Dozens gather for Lincoln’s annual CROP Walk for Hunger

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Community members laced up their shoes for the annual Lincoln Crop Walk for Hunger on Sunday.

Every step matters, and for many Lincolnites, the walk means one step closer to ending hunger.

This year’s walk brought faith groups and families together; all joining forces to raise both funds and awareness.

“Right now, especially with SNAP programs being cut, and the funds for the Food Bank being cut, we’re kind of getting hit on both ends of things and we need the funds more than ever,” said Tobi White, the pastor at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

The mission has raised almost $8,500 so far.

Organizers said 25% of those funds go toward the local programs that help provide meals for those around the community.

The other 75% goes to programs around the world.

“We’re always welcoming new congregations as part of the effort,” White said. “With other programs and things going on like Justice in Action, we’re getting to know each other really well, so it’s fun to see partners in ministry and the crop walk and other avenues as well. It’s like a giant family getting together and having a good time.”

Leanne Miller has been supporting the mission for about 20 years.

She is hoping for a brighter future.

“This is something that our church has done all of these years,” she said. “We’ve had people who organized it and support hunger. I love that the next generation is going to continue doing this and maybe someday nobody will be hungry and we won’t have to do this anymore.”
