Husker fans react to rumors circulating around Matt Rhule following James Franklin firing
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — After Penn State fired head coach James Franklin on Sunday, rumors started circulating around the possibility of Matt Rhule returning home.
Rhule played college football at Penn State, grew up on the east coast and has a deep connection with the program.
But during a press conference on Monday, Rhule reiterated his dedication to Nebraska football.
“I came here for two reasons: I love the community here and wanted to live here and I love it here, and I wanted to rebuild Nebraska football,” Rhule said. “Troy and I understand the steps that you need to take to make us Big Ten champions and national champions. This place is elite.”

“I love that place (Penn State), I love Pat, I love James Franklin,” said Rhule. “I’m sad that came to an end and I wish him the absolute best, but I’m really happy here and I’m excited to get going this week on Minnesota.”
Some Nebraska fans across Lincoln voiced their thoughts on the Rhule rumors.
“I think Matt Rhule is a perfect fit here in Lincoln,” said longtime Husker fan, Mike Morgan.
Some fans said they don’t want Rhule to leave.
“I’d clap as he left the building, but I would be really bummed as well,” said Grant Aden.
And other fans said it’s just part of the game.
“I get it, like this would probably be viewed as a dream job for him at Happy Valley and that’s totally understandable,” Morgan said.
Many fans appreciate what Rhule has done for Nebraska football since he landed in Lincoln in 2023.
“It be a sad day in Husker country if he were to choose his home stomping grounds,” Aden said.
Longtime fans said it’s not the first time coach rumors have circulated in Lincoln, and Morgan said it won’t be the last.
“I don’t like it as a fan, having a continuous revolving door, I would hate to see that,” Morgan said.
As for Penn State — they haven’t commented on any coaching decisions.
But if you ask fans in Lincoln, they’ll hope Rhule’s heart stays Husker red.
“Matt, if you were to leave, what are we going to name the Rhule Rita down here in the Railyard?” Morgan asked.
