Dangerous Wind Chills Friday, Weekend Snow Chances to Follow
Winter Weather Potential:
The latest round of winter weather features a one-two punch, starting with dangerous wind chills. An Extreme Cold Warning is in place for north-central and northeast Nebraska for wind chills between -30° and -35° on Friday morning.
The rest of the state is under a Cold Weather Advisory for wind chills -20° to -30° on Friday morning, this includes southeast Nebraska.
Here is the timing of the coldest wind chills over the next couple of days.
With the growing risk of accumulating snow on Friday, a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for northwest and central Nebraska. These could expand east as we get closer to this weekend.
Snow chances hit the forecast on Friday and into Saturday. Above is the latest run of StormCast showing when snow could reach your area.
This weekend’s snow chances come in the form of two systems moving across the state:
- Northwest and central Nebraska will see a swath of 2-4″ of snow possible with a quick-moving system on Friday.
- We see the northern edge of this weekend’s winter storm making national headlines in the southern half of the state late Friday and into Saturday morning. This will give us a shot at a few inches of snow in southeast Nebraska, though dry air from the north quickly drops snow totals for northeast Nebraska.
Forecast:
Outside of wind chills, air temperatures tonight will be frigid. Overnight lows are expected to dip below zero with increasing cloud cover.
We start cold and we end cold on Friday with highs temperatures in the single digits for Lincoln.
Highs will struggle to sneak above zero on Friday afternoon.
Frigid temperatures continue through the weekend before we slowly recover for the state of the work week. Temperatures return to the upper 20s with plenty of sunshine for the first half of next week.
