DHHS reports season’s first pediatric influenza death in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The first pediatric influenza-related death in Nebraska has been reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services for the 2025 to 2026 season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been 52 additional pediatric flu-related deaths nationally this season.

As of Jan. 30, there have been 22 flu-related deaths in Nebraska this season, according to DHHS.

While the flu can make anyone sick, certain people are at greater risk of serious complications:

  • Young children
  • Adults 65 years of age or older
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic lung diseases
  • Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities

DHHS recommends following these tips to protect yourself from the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your nose or mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces often
  • Consult with your healthcare provider about an annual flu vaccine
