Snow Angels in Lincoln turn snowfall into service and support for neighbors
LINCOLN, Neb. — After the snow stopped falling on Thursday, the work began.
Across Lincoln, volunteers known as “Snow Angels” grabbed shovels and snow blowers and headed into neighborhoods, clearing sidewalks for elderly residents, people with disabilities and others unable to manage the heavy snow on their own.
The community-based program matches volunteers with neighbors who need help after major snowfalls, ensuring sidewalks are safe and passable.
Organizers say the effort is about more than removing snow; it’s about strengthening connections.
“Community service and role modeling that for my kids and for others — especially now with everything going on in the world — it feels like we need more of helping each other out and supporting each other,” Corey Rumann, a Snow Angel volunteer, said.
For some, the work carries personal meaning.
“My mom recently died, and I think about when she needed help, and when she needed things, there were a lot of people there for her,” he said. “So in a way, it’s like her legacy or giving back to her.”
Volunteers say even a simple act like shoveling a walkway can prevent a fall and potentially serious injury, particularly for older residents navigating icy conditions.
They say the gratitude they receive makes the early mornings and sore muscles worthwhile.
“If you could’ve heard the person earlier when they said, ‘I am so, so grateful that you all are doing this and thank you so much,’ it felt really good to make a small contribution and a little bit of an impact in the community,” Rumann said.
One neighbor who received help expressed appreciation for the service.
“It’s really nice to know you can call somebody and help shovel,” Lincolnite Connie Graham said.
With more winter weather possible this season, organizers say they are always looking for additional volunteers willing to lend a hand.
For Lincoln’s Snow Angels, the mission goes beyond clearing sidewalks. It’s about showing up for neighbors when they need it most.
