Suspect injured in LPD officer-involved shooting outside of east Lincoln business

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department said it’s investigating an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning.
Lincoln Police chief Michon Morrow said one officer was involved and they were uninjured.
The suspect, a 49-year-old man, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. behind an Office Depot near N. 50th Street and R Street.
Morrow said officers were called to the business for an alarm. When the officer got to the location, Morrow said the officer located a man inside a small access door behind a dumpster.
The officer gave verbal commands to the man, according to Morrow. The man then threw a metal object at the officer and opened fire, Morrow said.
That’s when Morrow said the LPD officer returned fire. The man suffered injuries to his “lower extremities.”
“Our officers are trained to stop a threat and that is what occurred,” Morrow said.
Morrow said several other officers arrived shortly after the incident and began performing first aid on the suspect. He was taken to a local hospital where he was rushed to surgery. Morrow said he is expected to survive.
Morrow said the officer involved is now on paid administrative leave, which is the department’s policy.

A gun was gathered at the scene, Morrow said. LPD shared pictures of some of the items recovered.
LPD and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office remain at the scene continuing their investigation.
