Husker fan’s decked out 1951 Chevrolet rolling through Lincoln on game day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Husker tradition is tapping into the Nebraska men’s basketball team’s Sweet 16  run.

The 1950’s classic Chevrolet covered in all things Nebraska rolls through the streets of Lincoln almost every football game day.

With the men’s basketball team taking the court against Iowa, Thursday will be no different.

“We’ll buzz through the Haymarket real quick, and buzz the horn and get the fans pumped up a little bit,” said owner Doug Christie.

First owned by his grandfather, Christie bought the car in the 70s and has been driving around ever since to fire up crowds and showcase his loyalty for the Huskers.

The car attracts hundreds of fans every time it rolls, becoming a staple of Husker Nation.

“Everybody wants you to stop, in the middle of the street, wherever I’m at, so they can take pictures of it,” Christie said. “When I do stop, I get at least 50-100 people around it taking pictures. It’s just a ball; we have so much fun with it. That’s what it’s all about.”

Nebraska’s historic season is something Christie never thought would happen.

But now, he’s having more fun than ever.

“We’ve followed them for years and years and years,” he said. “I remember thinking, ‘Are we ever gonna get there?’ Finally, this year, about halfway into the season, we all thought we were for real. It’s just so much fun, we have the best fans in the Big 10 as far as I’m concerned, and it was like that in the Big 8.”
