Gilbert Hiatt and his service dog named Dream have been inseparable since he got her last Monday.
“A week ago today we went and picked her up and it was just a bond from the beginning,” said Cathy Hiatt, Gilbert’s wife.
Back in March, Gilbert was diagnosed with ALS – a disease that weakens muscles and impacts a persons ability to function.
Gilbert’s family thought a service dog would be the perfect companion, especially when his wife is at work.
“She stays right by him, she doesn’t let him go very far and he’s not walking very steady anymore. We just thought it would be a great thing for him to have just for comfort and guide and support,” Cathy said.
Last Monday the couple traveled to Mississippi to pick up the eight-year old black lab.
On their way home to Scottsbluff they stopped in Lincoln to visit their son and his family.
Saturday night a celebration from the Huskers win caused Dream to take off.
“He was just coming in off the back patio, she had her leash and collar on and she heard the fireworks and it scared her and she just jetted out the back.”
The dog hasn’t been seen since running off from the home near 84th and Pine Lake Road.
Despite searching late into the night on Saturday and every day since, the families efforts turned up empty.
Dream is micro–chipped, so the couple is hopeful someone will find her and take her to a vet so she can be tracked down.
“Unfortunately we have to go home without her.”
Hope is all the couple is clinging to as they return home without their furry friend.
