Blue Star Moms celebrate 90 high school seniors who decided to enlist this year

ASHLAND, Neb. (KLKN) – The decision to enlist is a serious one, but 90 high schoolers across 40 Nebraska cities have made theirs and are ready to serve.

A ceremony was held to celebrate that choice at the ‘Round the Bend’ Ballroom in Ashland on Wednesday.

Hundreds stood in silence as the majestic sound of bagpipes led the procession of the 90 new recruits.

The event was first created by the nonprofit ‘Our Community Salutes’ but was later taken over by the Blue Star Moms of Nebraska.

Lisa Compton is the president of the group’s Lincoln chapter and has two children who served.

“I remember how it was and how anxious I was when my son enlisted and left just days after graduation,” she said.

“Our group of Blue Star Mothers understands the emotions of pride and angst that they may feel about their child leaving home forever.”

The celebration is now in its fourth year and continues to grow.

“What is so impressive, at this young age, they are making this commitment from high school to join the military to do what others would not even consider,” said Compton.

She says fewer than 1% of Americans choose to enlist.

Paul and Rhonda Hall’s son, Tanner, was one of those who did.

Their reaction to the news?

“I think we were pretty proud. I think he’s serving his country like he wants to do,” said Paul.

As for any worries? They say they trust the system, and also, “I think the ambassador program through East High School in Lincoln was a positive,” said Rhonda.

Tanner explains his decision to join the Air Force, saying he made up his mind over a year ago.

“You can get a lot of discipline out of it,” he said.

Also, “The benefits were a big part of it. It kind of just sets you up for life.”

Ivan Manjarrez also has the goal of a secure future and is joining the Marine Corps.

He explains what he hopes to gain.

“I like the challenge you get from the Marine Corps, the brotherhood. For sure, some dependency, like being able to manage things on my own,” he said.

Manjarrez says he’s been preparing for it through physical training.

His recruiter, Devin Draypaul, says it’s Manjarrez’s attitude that prepares him the most.

“He is definitely someone who can push through,” said Draypaul.

He recounts the reason he joined the Corps himself, “For me personally, I just wanted something better for myself.”

The rest of the ceremony consisted of music, prayer and moral support.
