Cass County Sheriff, the Nebraska State Patrol, Ashland Fire Department, and several other agencies responded to a fatal train versus truck accident early Tuesday morning.
"Apparently he was in route to another business but missed his turn, approached the crossing, pulled out in front of the train, was struck by a westbound BNSF train," Sergeant Karl Boehm.
The accident happened just before 8:00 a.m. near 292nd street and Highway 66.
Cass County Sheriff officials tell us 57-year-old Shawn Sandrin of Lincoln was driving a dump truck.
They say he failed to stop before crossing the railroad tracks near Horseshoe Lake and was hit by the train.
Officials say Sandrin died at the scene.
The accident had traffic into and out of Horseshoe Lake blocked for several hours as police and railroad workers investigated.
"Once we get the debris off the tracks we’ll move the train we’ve already marked what we needed to so we can get the train moving and that will clear the way for other measurements as well," Sgt. Boehm said.
The last we checked 292nd street where the accident happened had still not reopened.
The dump truck driver’s identity has not yet been released, but the railroad crossing where he was hit does not have any lights or arms that come down as a train approaches.
