Local mother participating in Super Mom competition; raising funds for the Children’s Hospital
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — For many moms, the job never really stops.
But for one Lincoln mother, being a part of the Super Mom competition means more than earning votes online.
“Trying to spread that message and awareness is what’s driving this for me,” said Alicia Jennings, who is participating in the competition.
The national Super Mom competition shines a light on hardworking mothers across the country, while also raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.
For Jennings, it’s a way of honoring a journey her family will never forget.
“When I found out the work they’re doing through this Super Mom competition, to support that work, this makes sense to use this platform to help bring awareness to what they’re doing,” she said.
Jennings is sharing her story through the competition, which has a personal touch for her.
Her daughter spent some time at the Children’s Hospital in Omaha when she was just five months old, after she started bleeding due to complications from a virus.
“You kind of start to panic a little bit more. It became really real, real fast,” she said. “But our pediatrician got us sent up to Children’s right away. We had a whole hematology team waiting up there for us, and they got to work right away. They gave us a couple of transfusions, and slowly her platelet numbers got better.”
Contestants earn votes from community members online, who can also donate portions of money to the cause.
If Jennings wins, she would get a 20,000 prize, a feature in a magazine and a surprise family vacation.
Jennings said she wants to donate a portion of that prize money back to the Children’s Hospital in Omaha.
And the recognition she’s received is something she never really thought would happen.
“Motherhood for me has just been something I do,” she said. “I show up every day, even on the hard days. It’s not something I ever consider needs to be recognized, it’s just something we do.”
