Torandoes ripped through several towns in central Iowa leveling homes, damaging businesses, and even ripping the top off the Marshalltown courthouse.
As residents begin to pick up the pieces, three volunteers with the Lincoln branch of the American Red Cross are heading to Iowa to help with clean up.
"We’ve got sheltering there, we’ve got people out delivering bulk stuff, clean up kits, medical kits, you name it, gloves," said Vicki Halligan, one of the volunteers heading to Iowa.
Their first stop will be at the Red Cross Headquarters in Des Monies.
From there they’ll be sent to a specific neighborhood to serve. They’ll stay for two weeks doing everything from cleaning up debris to simply being there for the people.
"Everybody could use a hug once in awhile," said Bryan Mahoney, another volunteer making the trip.
After their two weeks are up, crews are rotated out, but being a part of the recovery process and connecting with the communities keeps these volunteers coming back to serve after every major disaster.
"It’s just an amazing process to help those who have lost everything," Mahoney said.
The Red Cross is still accepting donations for disaster relief in Iowa.
