While Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach Center sees 96% increase in visitors, immediate need of canned goods arise

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — From January to July, Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach center has seen a 96% increase in visits to its Fresh Choice Pantry. This includes a 52% increase between June and July.

Matt Talbot serves as an outlet of support for people across Lincoln. Visitors are able to stock up on groceries or get a hot meal twice a day, seven days a week.

Almost 10,000 onsite meals were served to guests in July and over 500 bags of groceries.

“This summer has been really busy for us,” Victoria O’Neil, director of hunger relief and volunteers, said. “The way that the economy is right now. Go to the gas pump and look at the gas prices. Look at the cost of food. Unfortunately we’re seeing cuts with SNAP benefits. Families are being hit really hard right now.”

While grocery prices continue to rise, so does the need for helpful services to residents in need. Matt Talbot states they are in immediate need of canned meats, soups and cereal.

“More and more households are turning to our pantry each week to help put food on the table,” said Alynn Sampson, Executive Director. “We are committed to showing up for every family who needs support, and donations help ensure our shelves stay stocked and ready.”
