Lincoln reacts to the passing of Dolly Parton
Lincoln, Neb. (KLKN) — The death of country music icon Dolly Parton is being felt across the country and here in Lincoln.
Channel 8 spoke with people Tuesday about what they’ll remember most about Parton and found her legacy goes far beyond her music.
Channel 8 also posted a poll on social media asking viewers what they’ll remember Parton for most: her music, acting or philanthropy.
One person who learned of Parton’s death while speaking with Channel 8 called the news “heart-wrenching.” Others described it as “devastating” and “such a loss.”
But as people reflected on Parton’s life, many said it wasn’t just her music they’ll remember. They talked about her kindness, generosity and the way she used her success to give back.
One person pointed to Parton’s Imagination Library, a program she started in 1995 that mails free books to children from birth to age five.
The program has reached families in Nebraska, including through the Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska City.
Parton’s connection to Nebraska also goes back decades. She performed at the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln in 1978.
Her music will also be featured Sunday at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island during “Divas Gone Country,” a show featuring hits from Parton and other country music icons.
For citizen journalist Melanie, who sent Channel 8 a video through the Now Local News app, it’s Parton’s acting she’ll remember most.
“It is very sad to learn about the passing of Dolly Parton today. I would say my favorite memory of Dolly is the movie ‘9 to 5.’ I loved it. It was about empowering women, working women, standing up for ourselves. I just always really enjoyed it,” Melanie said.
